Glass table tops and hardwood furniture add a sense of class and comfort to your dining room and your home. The scratches, fingerprints, and damage these pieces suffer through everyday use seriously detract from their elegance. Maintenance with a high quality glass cleaner and some of the following cleaning and repair tips will keep your dining room centerpiece in pristine condition.
Scratching
Felt Table Pads
Light scratching on the wood surface can make these furniture pieces appear dull and aged. Add to this fingerprints and wear on the glass table tops and your main table can look significantly older and more worn than it should. On the hardwood, rub in a circular motion following the direction of the grain with a little furniture polish and a soft cloth, or you can use a piece of wax paper on its own. Light scratching or scuffs on the glass will likely buff out with a buffing wheel.
Deep marks on glass table tops will require the expertise of a professional, but they are possible to fix. In some instances, you may be able to get away with filling small deep marks with clear nail polish. In the wood, you can fill deep scratches with clear wax sticks. Don't worry if the scratch goes through the stain -- simply touch it up with a matching stain pen and coat it with clear wax.
Chips
A professional is the best choice when it comes to repairing large chips in glass. However, you can repair tiny, shallow ones yourself. Using water and emery paper, carefully buff the scratch with a circular motion and light pressure. Continue to do this until you can no longer see the scratch. Use a hard felt buffing pad and polish to make it disappear.
On wood surfaces, chips will require a small amount of wood putty and a touch of clear coat. Apply a matching filler, allow it to dry and sand it lightly to make it flush. Then, touch it up with clear coat and buff it even. For a dent, wet a cloth with cold water, set it on top of the mark, and heat it with an iron. Once the dent lifts out, you can buff it with an extremely fine sand paper and buffing pad to make the repair disappear.
Glass Cleaner And Cleaning Tips
A high quality glass cleaner is really all you will need. If you select the type you use carefully, you can have a product that is safe on a variety of materials while still leaving you with a beautiful streak-free shine. If the glass cleaner you choose is not safe on other materials, hold a soft cloth over any surface to protect it and ensure the cleaner will not damage the finish.
When your hardwood becomes dull and takes on a dull, greasy appearance, a good scrub in the direction of the grain with a high quality furniture polishing cream will certainly do the trick. However, it you use a good quality furniture cleaner, you will likely never see a buildup on the finish.
Glass cleaner and these smart repair tips will allow you to give your glass table tops a sparkling brilliance. A few minutes of love and attention will buy your table numerous years of beauty and a long glorious life at the center of your household.
